Beginning of a good dialogue. Much more than recruitment
who is attracted
specific portfolio

what can we do to improve access
financial aid
dorms
geographic diversity
how do we parlay who we are and get that out in the world to make sure we have the diversity

 Auspicious topic

throw out important issues
the word Diversity and what it means

age gender political attitude religion socio economic geographic
we are a really luck to have a portfolio that tells us a lot about

we can not talk about ( preferred demographics 0
make separate the issue of ESL
to start the dialogue

The kind of school we are  dictates our market

without a foundation year we are more demanding

70% white males- has changed

5-6 years ago it became 10 times harder to get a loan
shifted our demographic enormously

10 percent were coming from high school
the rest were coming with no expectation  of transfer credit
1/3 of our students came from community colleges

colleges experience a drop in transfer students
how do we re- attract older students

at same time there are prep programs for younger high school students
a new market slipped in
how do we recapture some of these more mature students

we have less to offer than other ACAD
we have some diversity funds
what are we willing to pay for diversity

ex. costs 3 times more to bring in a latino student
what are we willing to pay

our situation will change when we get dorms
if we had dorms we could offer financial aid as part of the packet

California has a unique situation

we know you have ideas about

over the time I have been here we have gone from 20 percent negotiating discount to almost all students

Wendy
our strategic plan has a life cycle
Values in the strategic plan are lofty- we have not achieved
should the next generation have more practical goals with measurable

What is the timeframe?
needs to be approved in an October 16 2016 meeting

What does success look like for the day?
Good attendance and engaged conversation
a sense of direction going forward

Jane:
a bridge between the work we did this summer and  a sense coming out of the day of desire to continue work.
Anne: Address the potential that some think all this stuff goes into the ether.
I am sitting here thinking "heavy lifting" - so now I think what happened to all that work
" was it a waste of time"
Acknowledge the individuals that led the visioning the last time.

What are changes that have taken place?

Be honest with ourselves about  goals

Clear Compelling Stories

KIT
HOW CAN WE GET THE MOST DIVERSE and Gifted STUDENTS

Anne B
How do you do this so that the students feel gratitude and are not bitter?

Lorne: This is the real conversation
are we going to look squarely at the really difficult stuff
make your fears the focus of what your

What are the really hard questions
Student anger about their experience here
what is that about do we hear it are we responding to it

Why is alumni giving 1 percent

There are people that adore

The Yelp
corporate money grubbing place
what is the myth?

Why is there this unspoken sensibility that we are afraid to ask alumni for money?

we get hate mail back when people ask for money?
You are picking my pocket again after what you took from me?

Do we have the right faculty structure here?

Do we have organizational bloat?
Do we have a sometmes spoken struggle with a majority of asian students

let's talk about why it is
let's talk about

How do we see growth and do we see this as a dilution of the reason that students come here

Do we want to face these demons

Are we as exceptional as we think we are?

We need to have the courage to face some of these issues

maybe we can start the long process.

Nick:
IS there a sense that we are lowering standards of quality?

Are we ready as an institution to face any of these issues?

Geoff -Grand visions with reality of tuition dependency

Gary:
I am less concerned about dilution. There are smart people out there that don't know ACCD is an option.
much larger pool
are we drawing the people that are our best canadidates.

As we start talking about create change
value proposition will be key for marketing
change management is about internal

move forward confidently

My question to us slight admonition
do we really want to put those questions at there
